Dim Sum at Elite Restaurant 名流山莊 in Monterey Park, CA

Dim Sum at Elite Restaurant 名流山莊 in Monterey Park, CA For at least a decade, Elite Restaurant has been ranked by diners and foodies as one of the Top 3 dim sum palaces in the LA/OC area. These days, despite changes of staff and managers, the quality of their dim sum is still excellent. Most of the dishes we ordered were prepared well and were delicious. Despite the number of options we ordered, by the time we asked for our check, there wasn’t a dumpling left on the table .

Hunan Restaurant 湖南少官 in Rowland Heights, CA

Hunan Restaurant 湖南少官 in Rowland Heights, CA One of two locations (the other being in Monterey Park) serving up reasonably priced Hunan dishes.  Dishes that were made with a combination of dried red chiles and fresh green chiles offered a nice spicy kick to them.  The only dish we didn’t enjoy was the steamed tilapia.  Tilapia is a bottom dweller in the ocean.  Because of its diet, it is one of the reasons tilapia can have a muddy flavor to the meat. Service was decent, and t

Brunch at the First Los Angeles Area Location of Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 in Arcadia, CA

Brunch at the First Los Angeles Area Location of Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 in Arcadia, CA After dining at the newest Din Tai Fung location in Century City, I was quite disappointed by the food there.  Many of the dishes were prepared well, but there just seemed to be a certain blandness to the food.  So, I decided to bring my foodie group here for brunch yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food so much more.  I don’t know if it’s because the food is prepared better (I found the me

Yunnan & Sichuan Dishes at Yunnan Restaurant 雲南過橋園 in Monterey Park, CA

Yunnan & Sichuan Dishes at Yunnan Restaurant 雲南過橋園 in Monterey Park, CA When eating Chinese food in the San Gabriel Valley of Greater Los Angeles, there are only a few Chinese restaurants that specialize Yunnan cuisine.  It’s probably not easy to offer considering it’s province of China that features over dozens and dozens of minority ethnic groups, such as the Miao, Dai and Bai peoples, and many of the dishes are made with regional ingredients we most likely don’t have in th

Dim Sum at Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant 海港大酒樓 in Rosemead, CA

Dim Sum at Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant 海港大酒樓 in Rosemead, CA Sea Harbour was always considered as one of the best places to go for dim sum in the Greater Los Angeles area since it opened.  However, I did not like the dim sum I had during my last visit in December 2016. Today, a long time friend wanted good dim sum, and I decided to Sea Harbour another chance, and this visit changed my mind again about them.  The dim sum was well prepared and tasted delicious.  A far cry fr

酸菜魚 Dinner at Tai 2 太二 Chinese Sauerkraut Fish in City of Industry

酸菜魚 Dinner at Tai 2 太二 Chinese Sauerkraut Fish in City of Industry Sichuan style restaurant that specializes in spicy whole fish cooked in a spicy broth made with sour pickled vegetables (aka Chinese sauerkraut), dried red chiles, and Sichuan peppercorns.  The dish is can be quite spicy depending on the level of heat you choose.  We went with Medium Spice level, and it was quite spicy for our table.   The Sichuan peppercorns gave that nice numbing effect that somewhat neutral

Another Sichuan Feast at Hop Woo 合和 in West LA

Another Sichuan Feast at Hop Woo 合和 in West LA Came back for a hedonistic feast with a group of about 22.  This time, we wanted to sample more dishes on their Sichuan menu, as well as offering a couple of familiar Cantonese dishes to give our palates a rest from the barrage of spicy, mouth numbing food.  And in this meal we got quite a bit of that numbing quality from the Sichuan peppercorns used in the Boiled Fish with Rattan Peppers, and Rock Cod Fish. Food was excellent as

Cantonese Banquet Style Dinner at Xiang Yuan Gourmet 湘緣美食 in Temple City, CA

Cantonese Banquet Style Dinner at Xiang Yuan Gourmet 湘緣美食 in Temple City, CA In celebrating a good friend’s 60th birthday, we ordered the $388 set banquet menu which includes 10 courses, much of them being nice seafood dishes.  And with one vegetarian at the table, we supplemented the dinner with a couple of extra courses of vegetable dishes. We decided to give Xiang Yuan a try for dinner since we enjoyed their dim sum, and their dinner items, though tasty and solid, were unf

Beijing Duck Lunch at Duck House 鹿鼎記 in Monterey Park, CA

Beijing Duck Lunch at Duck House 鹿鼎記 in Monterey Park, CA For me, there are only a handful of places in the Greater Los Angeles Area that serves up really good Beijing Duck (aka Peking Duck), and Duck House is one of them.  They have been a staple here for over 15 years, and the quality of their food hasn’t diminished since.  In fact, they’re reaching out to foodies from around the city by participating in their very first DineLA Restaurant Week, which runs from July 13th thr

在金都吃點心, Eating Dim Sum at Capital Seafood Restaurant in Arcadia, CA

在金都吃點心, Eating Dim Sum at Capital Seafood Restaurant in Arcadia, CA Small chain of restaurants with 2 locations in Irvine, and one location in Arcadia that provides a higher end style of dining.  Though this location has been here for years, today’s brunch was the very first here at Capital Seafood.  Prices here are moderate, especially when compared to the other dim sum palaces, with prices starting at $3.98 per plate and up. At the Irvine Spectrum location, I discovered the

Shanghainese at S&W China Taste 上海小吃 in City of Industry, CA

Shanghainese at S&W China Taste 上海小吃 in City of Industry, CA A group of us had planned to go to lunch at another Shanghainese place called Noodle Kitchen in Rowland Heights.  However, a few days before this lunch, we found out though Yelp that Noodle Kitchen had shuttered, leaving me to scramble to find a new eatery for us to try. While everything was good, I didn’t find anything that stood out.  Their Xiao Long Baos (XLBs, aka Soup Dumplings) were just okay.  Meat filling wa

SHUTTERED: Szechuan Chef 川揚軒 in San Gabriel, CA

SHUTTERED: Szechuan Chef 川揚軒 in San Gabriel I first dined here 2 1/2 years ago when it was still called Szechuan Chef in English, but it’s Chinese name was “醉成都.”  First time back after 2 years, I was surprised to see new signage out front with a new Chinese name, “川揚軒.”  Generally, when this happens to a restaurant, it can indicate that it has gone through a change in ownership. This dishes we ordered on this night were excellent.  They weren’t shy about using the Sichuan pe

Shanghainese Food at Southern Mini Town 小南國 in San Gabriel

Shanghainese Food at Southern Mini Town 小南國 in San Gabriel Little hole-in-the-wall in the same mini-mall with the ever so popular Golden Deli.  The food it tasty; the prices are fair; but compared to other similar restaurants, the portion sizes for some of the dishes were on the paltry side. One of their popular dishes is this huge pork hock, served over a bed of greens and a dark sauce made with soy sauce and honey.  The hock is cooked down well, the meat just falls off the

Dinner at Sichuan Impression 镍城里 in Alhambra

Dinner at Sichuan Impression 镍城里 in Alhambra Though their sign still reads Szechuan Impression, somehow, over the years, they’ve decided to stop using the American romanization of 四川 and started using the Pinyin spelling instead.  And you can see that on their claimed Yelp page and Facebook pages. The food here was solid but not as good as when they first opened, and Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold was patiently waiting outside for a table with his son. While the

Beijing Cuisine at Bistro Na’s 那家小館 in Temple City

Beijing Cuisine at Bistro Na’s 那家小館 in Temple City Nice elegantly decorated restaurant transporting one to Beijing for elevated Beijing cuisine.  Service is very attentive, and food is good if you pick the right dishes.  For the most part, the dishes ordered were very good.  I wasn’t crazy with the Crispy Lamb as it was greasy from the deep fry, and the lamb was excessively gamey.  Food here on the pricier side but still competitively priced.  Dishes that stood out to me were

Delicious Sichuan Fare at Best Noodle House 重慶小面 in Rosemead

Delicious Sichuan Fare at Best Noodle House 重慶小面 in Rosemead A true hole-in-the-wall found on the eastern end of the city of Rosemead where Valley Boulevard and Mission Road intersects, where the food is mouth-numbing from the aggressive use of Sichuan peppercorns as well as the spiciness from the dried Sichuan red chili peppers and chili oil.  Then tastes the layers of flavors found in each dish, and you have a delicious meal, and for me, it’s some of the best Sichuan food i
